Dell Compellent and SC Series Data Recovery

Compellent Storage Center — sold later as the Dell SC Series — allocates storage in pages and moves those pages between tiers automatically. That page-level indirection is exactly why a failed controller, a deleted volume or a damaged page pool cannot be recovered by rebuilding a conventional RAID set.

Platform Lineage and Naming

Compellent Technologies shipped Storage Center from the mid-2000s and was acquired by Dell in 2011. The platform was sold as Dell Compellent, then renamed the Dell Storage SC Series, and its architecture later fed into Dell's midrange consolidation onto PowerStore.

Controller generations run from the original Series 30/40 controllers through SC8000 and SC9000, alongside the integrated SC4020, SC5020 and SC7020 arrays and the entry-level SCv2000, SCv2020, SCv3000 and SCv3020. Storage Center OS (SCOS) is common across them.

Architecture and Data Layout

Storage Center divides all capacity into pages and tracks them in a page pool. Volumes are thin by default, and Data Progression migrates pages between RAID levels and tiers based on access patterns — meaning a single volume's data typically lives across several RAID types and disk classes at once.

Replay snapshots are page-based: freezing a Replay marks pages as read-only rather than copying them. Recovery work often involves locating pages that belong to an older Replay after production data was damaged.

Because volume-to-page mapping lives in controller metadata, the recovery path is reconstruction of the page pool and its mapping tables from the surviving drives, followed by extraction of the guest file systems, VMFS datastores or databases stored on the volumes.

SC Series supports self-encrypting drives with Storage Center key management. Where SEDs are deployed, preserve the controllers and key configuration — drives removed from an encrypting SC array are not readable on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both SC controllers failed. Is the data lost?

Not necessarily. The pages and their mapping structures live on the drives, so the pool can often be reconstructed in the lab from the drive set even when neither controller will run.

Can you recover a deleted Compellent volume?

Frequently yes, provided the array has not continued to allocate freed pages to other volumes. Power the array down or stop I/O as soon as the deletion is noticed.

Do you need all the expansion enclosures?

We need every drive that was part of the page pool. Because Data Progression spreads pages across tiers and enclosures, a missing shelf can leave holes in the reconstructed volumes.
