Dell PowerVault ME and MD Data Recovery

PowerVault ME and MD arrays are the workhorse block storage of thousands of mid-sized environments — often running virtualisation, file servers or backup targets with no second copy. A double drive failure, a controller fault or a rebuild that never completed is the typical way these systems fail.

Platform Lineage and Naming

The PowerVault name spans two decades of Dell direct-attached and SAN storage. The MD3 generation (MD3200, MD3220, MD3400, MD3420, MD3600, MD3620, MD3800, MD3820 and their expansion shelves) was based on LSI/NetApp E-Series controller technology.

Dell replaced the MD line with PowerVault ME4 in 2018, followed by ME5 in 2022 — both built on the Seagate/Dot Hill controller lineage that also underpins several other vendors' entry arrays. Legacy PowerVault MD1000/MD1200/MD1220 units are JBOD expansion enclosures rather than controller-based arrays.

Architecture and Data Layout

PowerVault ME and MD arrays are dual-controller block systems presenting LUNs over SAS, iSCSI or Fibre Channel. Capacity is organised either as linear disk groups (a classic RAID set carved into volumes) or, on ME firmware, as virtual pools built from paged disk groups.

Virtual pools introduce page-level indirection and tiering, so a volume in a pool is not a contiguous region of a single RAID set. Linear disk groups are closer to conventional RAID but still carry vendor-specific metadata (DDF-style configuration on disk) that must be interpreted correctly.

These arrays are commonly the datastore behind VMware or Hyper-V clusters, so the recovery target is frequently VMFS or CSV volumes and the virtual disks inside them.

ME and MD arrays can be configured with self-encrypting drives and array-managed keys. Where SEDs are used, the controller and its key/lock state must accompany the drives, or the media is unreadable.

Two drives failed in our RAID 5 PowerVault. Can it be recovered?

Often yes. Most 'failed' drives in an array are still partially or fully readable; we image each drive and rebuild the array virtually rather than forcing the controller to rebuild onto degraded media. The evaluation confirms what is achievable in a specific case.

Should we force the drives back online?

No. Forcing a disk group online or starting a rebuild after a multi-drive failure can overwrite the parity that recovery depends on. Power the array down and label the drive order before removing anything.
