Dell EMC XtremIO Data Recovery
XtremIO is a content-addressable all-flash array: every block is addressed by a fingerprint of its contents, deduplicated globally, and located through in-memory metadata tables. When an X-Brick cluster fails or a volume is deleted, the flash still holds the blocks — but nothing can be read back without rebuilding XtremIO's metadata layer.
Platform Lineage and Naming
XtremIO was founded in 2009 and acquired by EMC in 2012, shipping as the EMC XtremIO all-flash array. The second generation, XtremIO X2, arrived in 2017 under Dell EMC with denser X-Bricks and improved data services.
Dell has since positioned PowerStore and PowerMax for new all-flash deployments, but a large installed base of XtremIO and XtremIO X2 clusters remains in production, and decommissioned X-Bricks frequently hold data that is still needed.

Architecture and Data Layout
Each X-Brick contains a pair of storage controllers and a disk array enclosure. Multiple X-Bricks form a single cluster joined by an InfiniBand back-end fabric, and all controllers participate in serving I/O and holding metadata.
XtremIO stores data by content: incoming blocks are fingerprinted, deduplicated cluster-wide, compressed and written to flash. Address-to-hash and hash-to-physical tables — held in memory and journalled to flash — are what turn a host LUN offset into a physical location. Recovery therefore centres on rebuilding those tables.
XtremIO Virtual Copies (snapshots) share the same metadata structures, which is why an accidental refresh or restore from an XVC can be as damaging as a deletion, and why older copies can also be a route back to the data.
- XtremIO uses XDP (XtremIO Data Protection), a flash-optimised parity scheme, rather than conventional RAID groups. Protection is applied across the SSDs in a DAE with distributed parity.
- Global deduplication means one physical block can back many logical addresses, so a metadata loss affects far more logical capacity than the physical block count suggests.

Encryption and Keys
XtremIO supports data-at-rest encryption using self-encrypting SSDs. Where encryption is enabled, the cluster's key material must be preserved together with the drives; SSDs removed from an encrypting cluster alone are not readable.
Frequently Asked Questions

The cluster will not come up after a power failure. What should we do?
Do not attempt repeated power cycles or a cluster re-initialisation. Re-initialising an XtremIO cluster can rewrite metadata and is the single most damaging step after an outage. Leave the system powered off and have it evaluated.
Does global deduplication make recovery impossible?
No, but it means the recovery is a metadata reconstruction task rather than a stripe reassembly task, and it requires the full set of SSDs from the affected bricks.
