Dell EMC Enterprise Storage Data Recovery

Dell EMC covers the widest platform range of any enterprise storage vendor, because it carries three lineages at once: Dell's own PowerVault and Compellent lines, EMC's Symmetrix/VNX/Isilon heritage, and the modern Power-branded portfolio. Identifying which lineage an array belongs to is the first step of any evaluation, since the on-disk structures differ completely between them.

The Power portfolio consolidated a long list of predecessors. PowerStore replaced Unity and SC Series as the midrange unified platform, PowerMax succeeded VMAX and Symmetrix at the high end, PowerScale is the current name for Isilon scale-out NAS, and PowerFlex carries the ScaleIO software-defined lineage. Older arrays remain in production for years after end-of-sale, so recovery work regularly involves platforms Dell no longer sells.

Most Dell EMC cases are not single drive failures. They are pool-level events: a dynamic pool that lost more drives than its protection level allows, a storage group or volume deleted at the array layer, a failed code upgrade, or a controller pair that lost its configuration database while the drives themselves remained healthy.

Because these arrays sit under VMware, Hyper-V, Oracle, SQL Server and large file shares, recovery rarely ends at the LUN. Reconstruction usually continues up through VMFS or NTFS/XFS and into the databases or virtual machines that the business actually needs back.

Every Dell EMC evaluation starts with a read-only assessment of the media and the array's protection layout. Nothing is written back to the original drives, and the array configuration is documented before any reconstruction is attempted.
