Hitachi VSP Data Recovery
The Virtual Storage Platform is Hitachi's enterprise array line, deployed where downtime is measured in seconds — banking, telecoms, government and large manufacturing. Because the hardware is built for continuous availability, most recovery cases stem from configuration loss, thin-pool problems, or a parity group that lost more drives than its RAID level allows.
Platform Lineage and Naming
Hitachi's enterprise storage line runs from the Lightning 9900 through TagmaStore USP, USP V/VM, VSP, VSP G1000/G1500, and today's VSP 5000 series, VSP E series and VSP One Block. Hitachi Data Systems was rebranded Hitachi Vantara in 2017.
The same platforms have long been OEM'd by other vendors — most visibly as HPE XP — so a recovery on an HPE XP7 or XP8 is architecturally the same work as a VSP G1000 or VSP 5000. Sun and Oracle also resold earlier generations.

Architecture and Data Layout
A VSP is built from front-end directors, a large global cache, and back-end directors driving parity groups of physical drives. LDEVs (logical devices) are carved from parity groups or allocated as pages from Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning pools, then mapped to host ports as LUNs.
Global cache and shared memory hold the configuration and mapping tables. A shared-memory or configuration event can make an array with entirely healthy drives unreadable until that mapping is reconstructed.
The platform can also virtualise external third-party arrays behind it, so a VSP recovery sometimes involves back-end LUNs that physically live on another vendor's hardware — which must be identified before any reconstruction begins.
- Parity groups use RAID 1+0, RAID 5 (3D+1P, 7D+1P) and RAID 6 (6D+2P, 14D+2P); the concatenated parity group option spreads LDEVs further.
- HDP pools allocate LDEV pages across many parity groups, and Hitachi Dynamic Tiering can relocate those pages between media tiers, so physical placement changes over time.
Logical Failures
- Deleted LDEVs, host groups or LUN paths
- HDP pool full or blocked, taking thin volumes offline
- Shared memory / configuration table loss after a dual power event
- Failed microcode update
- External (virtualised) storage disconnected or reassigned
- TrueCopy / Universal Replicator resynchronised in the wrong direction

Hardware Failures

Encryption and Keys
VSP arrays support controller-based data-at-rest encryption with internal key management or an external KMIP key manager. Encryption keys must be preserved with the drives — encrypted parity groups cannot be interpreted otherwise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an HPE XP recovery the same as VSP?
Architecturally yes — HPE XP arrays are Hitachi platforms sold under HPE branding, with the same parity group, LDEV and pool structures.
The array virtualised another vendor's storage. Where does the data actually live?
On the external array's drives, with the mapping held by the VSP. Both sides are needed: the external LUNs for the data and the VSP configuration for the mapping.
Can you recover from a VSP that has been decommissioned?
Yes, provided the drives from the affected parity groups are available and identified by their chassis and slot positions.
