HPE MSA Data Recovery
The MSA is HPE's entry-level SAN and the array most often found in small data centres, branch offices and departmental VMware clusters. Cases usually arrive after a second drive failed during a rebuild, or after a controller event left the disk group offline.
Platform Lineage and Naming
The MSA (Modular Smart Array) line goes back to HP's MSA1000 and MSA2000 arrays, continued through the P2000 G3, and returned to MSA branding with the MSA 1040/2040, then 1050/2050, and today's MSA 1060, 2060 and 2062.
Controller lineage across these generations means the on-disk structures are broadly consistent, and MSA arrays are frequently redeployed second-hand — so recoveries often involve out-of-support hardware where replacement controllers are scarce.

Architecture and Data Layout
MSA arrays are dual-controller block systems presenting volumes over SAS, iSCSI or Fibre Channel. Capacity is organised into disk groups, and depending on configuration those are either linear (a classic RAID set carved into volumes) or virtual (disk groups pooled, with volumes thin-provisioned and pages distributed across the pool).
The distinction matters: linear disk groups can often be treated like conventional RAID sets, while virtual pools require the array's page-mapping metadata to reassemble a volume correctly.
Recovery is performed from images of every member drive, including any expansion enclosures, followed by file-system recovery for VMFS, NTFS or Linux volumes above the LUN.
- Linear disk groups use RAID 0/1/3/5/6/10/50; virtual disk groups use RAID 1/5/6/10 within the group with volumes spread as pages across all groups in a pool.
- MSA metadata is written to each member drive, so drive order can usually be re-derived — but drives must be labelled by slot and enclosure before removal to avoid ambiguity.
Logical Failures
- Disk group offline after multiple drives were marked failed (leftover / stale state)
- Failed or interrupted rebuild after a second drive dropped
- Deleted volumes or disk groups
- Drives reinserted in the wrong slots after maintenance
- Failed controller firmware upgrade
- Virtual pool metadata inconsistency after a power event
- VMFS or NTFS corruption on presented volumes
Hardware Failures
- Multiple drive failures inside one disk group
- Controller module failure, or both controllers offline
- Cache battery / supercapacitor failure with dirty cache pending
- Expansion enclosure, SAS cable and expander faults
- Midplane failure in the head enclosure
- Batch drive firmware faults causing simultaneous drop-outs
Encryption and Keys
Later MSA generations support full disk encryption with self-encrypting drives and an array passphrase. Where FDE is enabled, the passphrase and lock key are required to read the drives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should we clear the 'leftover' flag on the drives to bring the disk group back?
Not before the drives are imaged. Clearing leftover state or forcing a disk group online can trigger a rebuild with stale parity and reduce what is recoverable.
A rebuild failed halfway. Is the data gone?
Usually not. A partially completed rebuild leaves a mix of old and new parity, and reconstruction from images can normally identify which stripes are consistent.
Is the P2000 handled the same way?
Yes — the P2000 G3 is the same platform under an earlier name and uses the same disk group structures.
