Platform Lineage and Naming

IBM and NetApp formed an OEM agreement under which IBM resold NetApp's FAS controllers under the IBM System Storage N series name, spanning entry-level N3000 systems through mid-range N5000/N6000 and high-end N7000 controllers. Each N-series model corresponds to a NetApp FAS equivalent of the same generation.

IBM shipped these systems with IBM firmware branding, IBM part numbers on EXN-series disk shelves, and IBM support and documentation, while the operating environment remained Data ONTAP — first in 7-Mode and later with Cluster-Mode/clustered Data ONTAP options as NetApp's own product line evolved.

Architecture and Data Layout

N series controllers run Data ONTAP exactly as NetApp shipped it for the corresponding FAS generation, organising physical disks into RAID groups and RAID-DP-protected aggregates, with WAFL (Write Anywhere File Layout) managing block placement, snapshots and copy-on-write updates within those aggregates.

Flexible volumes are provisioned from an aggregate's free space, and disk ownership records embedded on each disk identify which controller and pool a drive belongs to — a detail that matters when drives from an IBM N-series shelf are handled outside their original chassis.

The main practical differences from native NetApp hardware are IBM firmware branding, IBM-specific part numbering on shelves and controllers, and IBM's own support tooling — the ONTAP data structures themselves are unchanged.
