IBM Enterprise Storage Data Recovery

IBM's block storage estate is unusually consistent under the surface: FlashSystem, Storwize and SAN Volume Controller all run the same code base, known today as IBM Storage Virtualize and previously as IBM Spectrum Virtualize. The DS8000 line is separate, with its own mainframe-oriented architecture.

IBM Storage Virtualize systems group drives into arrays (mdisks), pool them into storage pools (mdiskgrps) and carve volumes (vdisks) out of those pools, usually with Distributed RAID. The same terminology and structures apply whether the hardware is a current FlashSystem, an older Storwize V7000, or an SVC cluster virtualising third-party arrays behind it.

That virtualisation layer creates a specific failure mode: when SVC or Storage Virtualize configuration is lost, healthy back-end arrays become unreadable because the mapping from back-end LUNs to host volumes no longer exists. Recovering the mapping is the work, not repairing the disks.

DS8000 arrays serve IBM Z and Power environments with ranks, extent pools and CKD or FB volumes. Recoveries there frequently involve mainframe volume formats and datasets rather than open-systems file systems.

Frequent IBM cases include DRAID pools that lost more drives than their rebuild areas could cover, volumes deleted or unmapped in the GUI, failed code upgrades, Data Reduction Pool inconsistency, and T3 recovery procedures that were run against the wrong configuration backup.
