NetApp E-Series and EF-Series Data Recovery

E-Series and EF-Series are NetApp's block arrays running SANtricity, a completely different architecture from ONTAP. They sit behind HPC clusters, video workflows, backup targets and databases, and their most common failure is a volume group or disk pool that dropped more drives than its protection level allows.

Platform Lineage and Naming

The E-Series descends from the Engenio controller line developed at LSI, which NetApp acquired in 2011. The same controller lineage was OEM'd for many years by other vendors, which is why E-Series structures appear inside arrays badged by third parties, including Dell's PowerVault MD3 generation.

Hybrid models run E2700, E2800, E2860, E5600, E5700 and E5760; all-flash models run EF550, EF560, EF570, EF300 and EF600. SANtricity OS is common across the line, and DE-series expansion trays extend capacity.

Architecture and Data Layout

E-Series arrays are dual-controller block systems presenting volumes over FC, iSCSI, SAS, InfiniBand or NVMe. Capacity is organised either into classic volume groups (a RAID set carved into volumes) or Dynamic Disk Pools, which spread data and parity across all drives in the pool in small D-pieces.

Dynamic Disk Pools change the recovery picture: there is no fixed stripe across a small set of drives, so reconstruction depends on interpreting the pool's own mapping structures across every member drive.

These arrays are frequently used as raw block storage for parallel file systems (GPFS/Spectrum Scale, Lustre, StorNext) and for VMware datastores, so the recovery target above the array layer varies widely.

Encryption and Keys

E-Series supports full disk encryption with self-encrypting drives and internal or external key management. Where FDE is enabled, the security key file and its passphrase are required — without them the drives remain locked.

SANtricity marked several drives failed at once. Should we revive them?

Do not use 'revive drive' or force a volume group online before the drives have been imaged. Reviving a stale drive can trigger writes that destroy consistent parity.

Can Dynamic Disk Pools be reconstructed?

Yes, when the pool member drives are available. DDP reconstruction is a mapping exercise across all pool drives rather than a simple RAID stripe rebuild.
