NetApp FAS Data Recovery

FAS is NetApp's hybrid disk-and-flash platform, and the systems behind a large share of enterprise NAS and SAN estates. Failures usually come from lost aggregates after multiple disk faults, a controller or shelf event, or an ONTAP operation that removed volumes and LUNs that were still needed.

Platform Lineage and Naming

The FAS (Fabric-Attached Storage) name goes back to NetApp's original filer line. The platform moved from Data ONTAP 7-Mode through Clustered Data ONTAP to today's ONTAP releases, with the FAS2000, FAS3000, FAS6000, FAS8000 and FAS9000 families marking successive controller generations.

Current and recent hardware includes FAS2720/FAS2750, FAS2820, FAS8300, FAS8700 and FAS9500; earlier FAS2240, FAS2552, FAS3220, FAS3250, FAS6280 and FAS8040/8060/8080 systems remain widely deployed. All-flash workloads moved to the AFF line, while FAS continues as the hybrid and capacity platform.

Architecture and Data Layout

A FAS system is one or more HA controller pairs running ONTAP. Physical disks are grouped into RAID groups, RAID groups into aggregates, and aggregates host FlexVol volumes; LUNs for SAN hosts are files inside those volumes. Every layer is described by WAFL metadata on the disks themselves.

In a clustered ONTAP configuration, storage virtual machines (SVMs) own volumes and LIFs across nodes, so cluster configuration loss can make otherwise healthy aggregates unreachable even though the data is intact.

Recovery work usually means imaging shelf drives, reconstructing the aggregate and RAID group geometry, walking the WAFL structures, and extracting volumes, qtrees, LUNs or individual files.

Encryption and Keys

FAS supports NetApp Storage Encryption (self-encrypting drives) and NetApp Volume Encryption with onboard or external (KMIP) key management. If either is in use, key material and the cluster's key configuration must be preserved with the drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

ONTAP says the aggregate is offline and cannot be brought online. What now?

Do not run wafliron or force an aggregate online before the disks have been imaged. Those operations write to the file system and can reduce what is recoverable. Powering the system down and having the drive set evaluated preserves the most options.

We deleted a volume and there is no snapshot. Is it recoverable?

Sometimes. WAFL does not immediately overwrite freed blocks, so the sooner writes to the containing aggregate stop, the better the odds. This is assessed during the evaluation.

Do you need the controllers or just the disks?

The drives from all shelves in the affected aggregate are essential. Controllers and shelf modules help when configuration or encryption state is needed, but the reconstruction itself is done from drive images.
