NetApp Data Recovery

Almost every NetApp recovery comes down to one question: is this a WAFL system or an E-Series system? ONTAP-based AFF and FAS arrays store data in WAFL aggregates with their own metadata and snapshot structures, while E-Series and EF-Series use a completely different volume-group and dynamic-disk-pool layout inherited from the LSI/Engenio line.

ONTAP systems organise disks into RAID-DP or RAID-TEC raid groups, raid groups into aggregates, and aggregates into FlexVol volumes that carry the LUNs and file shares. WAFL's copy-on-write design means that deleted or overwritten data often persists in the aggregate for a period, which is one reason ONTAP recoveries can succeed after logical deletion even without snapshots.

E-Series and EF-Series arrays are block-only, built around volume groups and Dynamic Disk Pools with distributed spare capacity. They are widely deployed underneath Lustre, GPFS, Splunk and video workloads, so the recovery frequently continues into a parallel or clustered file system above the LUN.

Common NetApp cases include aggregates taken offline after multiple disk failures, volumes or LUNs destroyed at the CLI, failed ONTAP upgrades, disks reassigned or zeroed during maintenance, and shelf or controller faults that dropped an entire raid group at once.

Preserve the disk order and shelf positions before removing any media. NetApp layouts depend heavily on disk identity, and recording the original topology materially improves the reconstruction path.
