Everpure (formerly Pure Storage) FlashBlade Data Recovery
FlashBlade is the scale-out file and object platform from Everpure (formerly Pure Storage), used for analytics, AI training data, media workflows and rapid-restore backup targets. Because data is distributed across blades with erasure coding, recoveries centre on blade-level loss and Purity//FB metadata rather than individual drives.
Platform Lineage and Naming
Pure Storage (now Everpure) introduced FlashBlade in 2016 as a scale-out unified file and object system built from individual blades in a chassis, each with its own compute and flash. FlashBlade//S followed with disaggregated compute and DirectFlash Modules, and FlashBlade//E added a capacity-oriented variant.
Purity//FB is a distinct operating environment from Purity//FA on FlashArray — the two share branding but not file system structures, so they are treated as separate platforms for recovery purposes.

Architecture and Data Layout
A FlashBlade system distributes both data and metadata across every blade in the chassis, with erasure coding providing protection at the system level rather than RAID inside a blade. Purity//FB presents a single namespace for NFS, SMB and S3 clients.
Metadata is itself distributed, so a case involving multiple blade failures affects the ability to resolve file and object names as much as the raw data blocks — both layers must be reconstructed.
Because clients access the system as file shares or S3 buckets, the recovery target is usually a set of file systems or buckets with their directory structure and object keys intact.
- Protection is by distributed erasure coding across blades; how many blades can be lost before data becomes incomplete depends on the system size and configuration.
- Blades combine compute and flash on the original generation, whereas //S separates compute from DirectFlash Modules — which changes exactly what media must be preserved.
Logical Failures
- Deleted file systems, buckets or objects with SafeMode not enabled or already expired
- Snapshot expiry or removal before a restore was performed

Encryption and Keys
FlashBlade encrypts data at rest by default with system-managed keys. Preserve the full system and its key state — individual blades or modules cannot be interpreted in isolation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Objects were deleted from an S3 bucket. Are they recoverable?
If SafeMode snapshots or object versioning were enabled, restore from those first. Otherwise recovery depends on whether the underlying space has been reclaimed, which the evaluation determines.
Can you recover from a single blade?
Rarely. Data and metadata are erasure coded across the system, so blades from the whole chassis are normally required.
Is FlashBlade recovery the same as FlashArray?
No. FlashBlade runs Purity//FB with a scale-out file and object architecture, which is structurally different from Purity//FA on FlashArray.
