What Are the Common Questions About Data Recovery?
By Matt Brennan
Most people don’t know much about data recovery until there is a need for it within their lives. They may know that it’s good to routinely save, or that cloud backups and portable hard drives are important. So, when information is lost, people have some common questions about data recovery.
Below are some of the questions that we tend to hear the most.
Common Questions About Data Recovery
How Much Does Data Recovery Cost?
Unfortunately, there is no black and white universal answer to this question. Not all data recovery cases are created equal. Various software and hardware configurations can make some recovery jobs quite complex.
Some jobs require intense work from data recovery engineers. Some jobs require a clean room environment. The reality is that we won’t know the exact cost until we’ve had a chance to examine the equipment in question. We wish we had a more concrete answer for one of the most common questions about data recovery, but the reality is that there are a lot of variables from job to job.
What is the Data Recovery Process Like?
The data recovery process begins with you sending the device to us. From there, our team will examine it and determine the amount of work involved and how long it will take to get your device back.
At this point, the choice is yours whether to continue with the process. If the cost doesn’t work, we can return the device to you. If the quote is suitable for you we continue with the data recovery work and put the data onto a new healthy device for you.
The process itself is performed by experienced engineers that have seen plenty of cases like yours before, and they take place within our professional, state-of-the-art facilities.
How Long Does Data Recovery Take?
The data evaluation may take 2-3 business days. After that evaluation, the engineers can typically tell you exactly how long the recovery might take. It may be around 1-2 weeks in the lab, counting that evaluation.
The more complex the device, the longer the amount of time it may require. RAID, NAS, or virtual machines can take longer.
Does the Amount of Data Recovered Influence the Price?
This is a valid question that we receive a lot. Some customers may only have a few gigabytes of missing data, while others might have terabytes that they urgently need. The truth is that the price isn’t determined by the amount of data recovered.
The reality is that the amount of data recovered doesn’t have a significant impact on the amount of work that the technicians need to do. Our job is to get your device up and running long enough to salvage data. The amount of time the engineers spend on the job doesn’t really differ by the amount of data involved.
Do I Get to Choose What Data I Get Back?
Many customers don’t put the same priority on everything. Maybe this year’s financials are more important than data from over a decade ago. Maybe the family photos take precedence over a few digital albums you’ve been collecting.
When we undergo the work, we’ll ask what data takes priority for you.
